« La postérité n’a pas réservé à Stefano Landi les mêmes honneurs qu’à Monteverdi. Il nous fallait réparer cette injustice, car l’un comme l’autre de ces deux grands maîtres incarnent l’histoire naissante de l’opéra. Il Sant’Alessio a été écrit à Rome en 1632 ; vingt-cinq ans se sont donc écoulés depuis la création à Mantoue de l’Orfeo de Monteverdi, qui, avec l’Euridice de Peri, marquait l’avènement du genre. En choisissant un sujet historique et non plus mythologique, l’opéra de Landi s’en distingue nettement et s’inscrit dans la lignée de la Contre-Réforme catholique. Il est contemporain des grands chefs-d’œuvre accomplis de l’architecture et de la sculpture baroques : Le Bernin vient d’achever le baldaquin de Saint-Pierre, et avec Borromini, il donne à la Ville Sainte des monuments dont la magnificence et le faste révèlent un goût profond pour l’ostentation – jamais jusqu’alors les églises n’avaient à ce point ressemblé à des scènes de théâtre. Côté musique, nous sommes dans la Rome de Rossi, d’Allegri, de Mazzocchi et de Carissimi, – ce dernier deviendra d’ailleurs, quelque trente années plus tard, le maître de notre cher Marc-Antoine Charpentier lors de son voyage de formation à Rome.
Une puissance dramatique inédite
Avec le recul, Landi reste à mes yeux l’une des figures majeures de l’école romaine de son temps. Musicalement, Il Sant’Alessio est un vrai prodige d’écriture. Les sinfonias orchestrales qui ouvrent chaque acte forment les tout premiers exemples d’ouverture d’opéra; les ensembles chorals sont d’une puissance dramatique inédite et suscitent de saisissants effets de contraste face au style récitatif, dont toute l’œuvre est nourrie. On l’entend à chaque instant, la souplesse et le lyrisme des lignes mélodiques sont de la main de quelqu’un pour qui le chant n’a pas de secret, ce qui n’a rien d’étonnant quand on se rappelle que Landi avait pu entrer en qualité d’alto dans le chœur pontifical. Il y a dans l’écriture de notre Romain quelque chose d’à la fois simple, vivant et bouleversant : un souffle qui habite l’œuvre d’un bout à l’autre, prouvant que cet opéra était destiné à une occasion importante (il honore la visite du roi Alexandre de Pologne dans la Ville Éternelle), et révélant la puissante ferveur religieuse de Landi ».
