Que reste-t-il d’Yves Montand ? se demande Lambert Wilson : « une silhouette longiligne et souple, vêtue de noir, les échos d’une voix reconnaissable entre mille, un vibrato particulier, un répertoire considérable, des rencontres avec les plus grands poètes et compositeurs de son temps, une longue carrière d’acteur de cinéma, un engagement politique, des femmes, Simone Signoret, Edith Piaf, Marilyn Monroe, une popularité immense. » Pour incarner cette icône du XXe siècle, Lambert Wilson, lui aussi autant à l’aise au micro qu’à l’écran, a demandé à Christian Schiaretti de concevoir un spectacle musical. Textes, poésies, musiques, chansons arrangées au piano par Bruno Fontaine, dressent le portrait d’un homme, d’un artiste, et d’une certaine France. « Une France où l’immigré était accueilli. Une France où l’ascenseur social pouvait propulser le fils d’un prolétaire italien sur les plus grandes scènes du monde. Une France où la conscience politique ne s’amollissait pas dans le confort et la renommée, au contraire », selon le metteur en scène. Ni tour de chant, ni imitation de Montand : un dialogue, tout simplement.
