Woyzeck, soldat pauvre qui cumule les emplois d’exploités pour finir son mois, se fait l’assassin de Marie qui excite sa jalousie en passant d’amant en amant. Succession de fragments, la pièce de Büchner est demeurée inachevée, à cause de la mort précoce de son auteur, étoile fugace du dernier romantisme allemand. Répondant à l’ébauche textuelle par un arpentage progressif, les comédiens, réunis autour de la metteur en scène Marie Lamachère, ont créé « cinq formes rhizome » qui confrontent le matériau dramaturgique à leurs « propres positions d’hommes et femmes d’aujourd’hui ». Le but est de « saisir la constellation que notre propre époque forme avec telle époque antérieure », à la manière dont Walter Benjamin nous invite à « faire éclater le continuum de l’histoire ». Les acteurs se font interprètes, danseurs et conteurs pour tâcher de donner chair et sang à la pensée de chaque personnage, et essayer d’élucider, scène après scène et situation après situation, la question de l’essence de l’homme, sa charge critique et les réponses qu’on peut lui apporter. Entre le travail physique de la scène et le labeur philosophique de la réflexion, Marie Lamachère et les siens explorent l’aventure intérieure d’un héros voyageant en somnambule entre rêve, folie et fait-divers.
