Un homme, noir, en bleu de travail, nous regarde. Il s’appelle Woyzeck. Soldat revenu de la guerre, coupeur de joncs, tailleurs de barbes, livreur de vin ou cobaye d’expériences médicales, il racle ici et là quelques sous pour faire vivre sa femme et son enfant. Cet homme est aussi un immigré sénégalais, père de Jean-Pierre Baro, technicien qualifié dans l’aéronautique, en butte au racisme ordinaire. L’un comme l’autre, perdus dans l’alcool et les hallucinations, sombrant dans la paranoïa ou le crime, disent la violence sourde de l’aliénation et de l’exclusion, mais aussi la puissance folle de l’amour. « A travers la confrontation et l’agencement des fragments fictifs de Büchner et de l’histoire d’un prolétaire déraciné, je désire aborder les thèmes de la dislocation culturelle, la sensation de sans-abri, sans patrie, et la suppression d’émotion. » explique le metteur en scène. En tissant la pièce de Büchner, laissée inachevée en 1837, et une fiction inspirée de sa biographie, il fait résonner l’œuvre au plus intime.
