L’ombre de quelques pauvres baraques en bois découpe le ciel déchiré de larges traînées blafardes… C’est là, dans la grisaille aride de ce paysage crayonné au fusain, sombre évocation d’un Transvaal minier, que vit un ouvrier noir, jeune encore et pourtant condamné : Woyzeck. Là que le prolétaire, usé par le travail au fond des mines d’or sud-africaines, se cogne aux violences de la misère, aux coups de l’amour, et s’abîme dans la folie du meurtre. Dans son texte laissé inachevé, Georg Büchner (1913-1937) s’inspire d’un fait divers : le meurtre d’une prostituée poignardée en 1821 à Leipzig par son amant. Il attrape par bribes les égarements d’une destinée tragique, esquissant la vision d’un monde morcelé, indéchiffrable, où l’homme succombe sous les tiraillements de sa nature contradictoire et les rouages de la société. Plasticien, metteur en scène, réalisateur de films d’animation, William Kentridge reprend sa mise en scène créée en 1992 avec la Handspring Puppet Company, qui transposait la pièce dans le contexte sud-africain. « Le XIXe siècle décrit par Büchner – d’une violence terrible amenant un désespoir tout aussi terrible – résonne fortement avec la situation en Afrique du sud dans les années 90 – et résonne encore aujourd’hui. » souligne-t-il.
Prolétaire noir
Le soldat barbier de Büchner devient ici mineur, sous les ordres d’un contremaître blanc, hautain et raciste, devient aussi cobaye du médecin blanc, baderne pansue au crâne rasé qui se livre sans vergogne à de frauduleuses expérimentations. Sur l’écran placé en toile de fond, les images mouvantes dessinent tantôt la perspective fantomatique des usines et bidonvilles du plateau minier du Highveld, près de Johannesburg, tantôt l’imaginaire tourmenté des personnages. Manipulées à vue, les marionnettes jouent le drame de Woyzeck, de cet homme qui « court à travers le monde comme un rasoir ouvert ». « La parole chez Büchner est comme un accès de fièvre suscitant par sa magie de belles tâches colorées, irrégulières, qui composent ça et là d’étranges figures » écrivait Robert Musil. C’est ce miroitement de l’écriture, cette énigme de l’humain que William Kentridge fait vivre sur scène.
