Georg Büchner a écrit Woyzeck – pièce inachevée et fragments – dans la fulgurance d’un acte poétique à l’image du destin tragique du héros allemand, homme du peuple, pauvre soldat manipulé par sa hiérarchie, par un médecin militaire et par l’amour de Marie encore, la belle enchanteresse qui le rend fou. L’homme vit douloureusement les amertumes de sa condition sociale entremêlées à ses aspirations intimes. Woyzeck agit comme la caisse de résonance d’un monde blafard, injuste et cruel. Du plus profond de lui-même, Woyzeck écoute des voix énigmatiques et éloquentes, prophétiques et visionnaires. Aujourd’hui, Woyzeck fraie non seulement avec la Handspring Puppet Company et son concepteur de marionnettes, Adrian Kohler, mais aussi avec le metteur en scène, plasticien et vidéaste, célèbre pour ses films d’animation réalisés au fusain, William Kentridge.
Le miroir brumeux de l’imaginaire
L’action est désormais transposée en Afrique du Sud à Johannesburg, en 1956, ou le héros noir est un travailleur migrant à l’ère de l’industrialisation. En guise de décor, le plateau minier du Highveld, un univers fantomatique de catastrophes individuelles et collectives, composé d’usines, de bidonvilles, le miroir brumeux de l’imaginaire tourmenté des marionnettes. Les manipulateurs, effacés ou bien au plus près de leurs créatures à tiges, accomplissent sur fond de film d’animation un ballet de gestes qui donnent à ces têtes de bois une émotion vraie. Qui manipule l’autre ? Une illustration visuelle de l’esprit torturé de Woyzeck, un héros infiniment moderne.
