L’opéra a toujours raconté plus ou moins la même histoire : celle du héros face à la multitude. Ce qu’invente le xxe siècle, c’est l’anonymat du héros. Wozzeck, le protagoniste de l’opéra d’Alban Berg est en cela exemplaire, puisqu’il n’a pour toute grandeur que son humanité malade, impuissante face au mépris et à la violence des autres hommes. Le destin tragique de l’homme est traité comme une mécanique implacable, en place dès la toute première scène. Chef-d’œuvre musical bâti comme une symphonie, qu’affectionnent les chefs d’orchestre modernes (Sylvain Cambreling en est bien évidemment), Wozzeck est aussi un passionnant défi pour les metteurs en scène, qui ont ici occasion de figurer l’individu dans son plus grand isolement, tant réel que psychique. Le Suisse Christoph Marthaler, metteur en scène et dramaturge engagé, n’aura pas ici à forcer pour donner toute son actualité à l’ouvrage.
