L’intrigue de Wozzeck pourrait se résumer à un fait divers. La construction musicale élaborée par Alban Berg — chacune des quinze scènes enchaînées, trois pour chaque acte, emprunte une forme différente — en fait bien autre chose. Car la musique, si elle s’identifie parfois avec l’action scénique (marche militaire, airs de danse…), révèle avant tout la psyché de Wozzeck, préfigure le monde tel qu’il le ressent. Cela est évidemment difficile à transcrire sur scène, pourtant William Kentridgle y parvient magistralement, à l’aide d’un décor qui se transforme par les jeux d’éclairage, semblant réagir à chaque mouvement de la musique — une vision extrêmement troublante, où l’on ne sait plus si l’on est dedans ou dehors, dans le monde réel ou dans l’esprit de Wozzeck. Avec Susanna Mälkki à la direction et Johan Reuter dans le rôle-titre (et Eva‑Maria Westbroek dans celui de Marie), la musique se hissera sans aucun doute au niveau d’excellence de la mise en scène.
