À l’image de son grand modèle, Duke Ellington, Wynton Marsalis compose régulièrement des pièces qui cherchent à concilier les formes musicales classiques occidentales avec les spécificités du langage du jazz. Il en fait une nouvelle fois la preuve à l’occasion de deux concerts à la Philharmonie, au cours desquels sera non seulement créé son Concerto en ré pour violon par la violoniste écossaise Nicola Benedetti mais aussi jouée sa Jungle Symphony (la quatrième de sa main), interprétée par l’Orchestre de Paris mêlé au Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, le big band qu’il dirige (avec lequel il donnera un concert trois jours auparavant). Commande du New York Philharmonic datant de 2017, cette symphonie en six mouvements se veut un regard porté sur la ville de New York tel qu’elle nous apparait de nos jours, dans les beautés et les complexités de son urbanité.
