En mai 2007, l’Orchestre de Paris avait demandé à Xavier Phillips d’interpréter le concerto d’Henri Dutilleux, Tout un monde lointain…, en hommage à Mstislav Rostropovitch. Un choix logique puisque le jeune violoncelliste, né en 1971, lauréat du Concours Rostropovitch en 1994, s’était ensuite rapproché du légendaire violoncelliste russe. C’est ainsi Mstislav Rostropovitch lui-même qui le dirigea, dès 2003, à la tête des orchestres de Washington et de New York. En 2004, toujours dirigé par son mentor, Xavier Phillips faisait ses débuts avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Chicago dans les Variations sur un thème roccoco de Tchaïkovski. C’est cette même œuvre qu’il reprend le 12 novembre sous la direction de Christoph Eschenbach, entourée de deux autres œuvres de jeunesse, l’ouverture-fantaisie Roméo et Juliette et la fantaisie symphonique Francesca da Rimini. La semaine suivante, rejoints par le jeune violoniste Erik Schumann, les mêmes interprètes jouent le Double Concerto de Brahms, suivi de sa Deuxième Symphonie.
