Depuis dix ans, les Paladins et leur chef claveciniste, Jérôme Corréas, s’emploient à faire découvrir les chefs-d’œuvre oubliés de l’art musical baroque. Leur exploration du répertoire musical dramatique italien les conduit cette fois-ci vers Cavalli, le principal compositeur dramatique après Monteverdi. Après avoir œuvré à la redécouverte de L’Ormindo au printemps 2007, Corréas s’attaque cette fois-ci à Xerse, le plus célèbre opéra de Cavalli.
L’influence de Monteverdi y est présente. Cavalli n’atteint certes pas la profondeur de son illustre prédécesseur, mais il déploie un sens mélodique charmeur et une intimité qui feront sa renommée. La gloire du compositeur le conduira même à Paris, où il est appelé pour composer un opéra à l’occasion du mariage de Louis XIV. Le projet initial ne verra pas le jour et Cavalli reprendra Xerse dans une collaboration orageuse avec Jean-Baptiste Lully.
C’est donc une pièce essentielle de la musique dramatique du XVIIe siècle que Les Paladins feront revivre au théâtre des Champs-Elysées. « Rarement l’équilibre entre airs et récitatifs, texte et musique aura été aussi parfait que dans Xerse » souligne Jérôme Correas. Entrons dans ce premier Xerse, « Dramma per Musica », où la performance d’acteur est aussi essentielle que les belles voix, et où le « lieto fine », « invraisemblable retournement de situation contraignant le roi à épouser celle qu’il avait délaissée, laisse, dans le dernier chœur en mineur, un goût doux-amer aux protagonistes comme au spectateur »… Décidément très présents dans le domaine lyrique, Corréas et ses Paladins auront ouvert leur saison, une semaine auparavant à Royaumont, avec une version de concert de l’opéra-comique La Fausse Magie (1775) d’André Modeste Grétry, grand maître de l’opéra français de la période prérévolutionnaire, fortement marqué par l’art vocal italien et annonciateur à sa façon de Rossini.
