En s’appuyant sur une formule instrumentale idéale – accordéon, violon, clarinette, contrebasse et guitare – et une équipée de musiciens hors pair issus d’horizons différents, Yankele réactive la tradition musicale des communautés juives d’Europe de l’Est. Un continent musical à la fois enfoui sous les décombres de l’histoire et de la barbarie et d’une intacte intensité et actualité. Pour peu qu’on veuille bien lui prêter une oreille attentive et exigeante, la musique klezmer ne demande qu’à laisser rayonner son brio et sa vision du monde pleine de profondeur, de fantaisie et d’amour de l’autre et de l’instant présent. « Yankele veut dire Petit Jacques en yiddish, mais grand est leur art, s’enthousiasme Georges Moustaki, « fan » du groupe. Ce sont cinq amis, cinq musiciens unis comme les cinq doigts d’une main de virtuose qui jouerait une musique sans frontières, sans limites…. Ils perpétuent la tradition du “peuple errant”, imprégnée de tous les rythmes du monde, tous les modes, toutes les mélodies rencontrées sur leur route ».
