Né en 1974, formé au CNSM dans les classes de Frédéric Durieux et Michael Levinas, puis auprès de Jonathan Harvey au Centre Acanthes et enfin à l’Ircam, Yann Robin compte aujourd’hui parmi les compositeurs français de sa génération les plus actifs et sollicités (résident à la Fondation Royaumont, à la Villa Médicis à Rome, à l’Orchestre National de Lille, fondateur de l’Ensemble Multilatérale, etc…). Sa nouvelle oeuvre Vulcano vient d’être créée au festival Musica de Strasbourg par l’ensemble Intercontemporain avant d’être reprise aujourd’hui à la Cité de la musique. Dans cette partition nouvelle conçue “sur mesure” pour les 29 musiciens de l’EIC, le compositeur n’hésite pas, pour insuffler à sa musique une redoutable énergie vitale, à convoquer Vulcain en personne, le " Dieu du feu, des métaux et de toutes les matières qui brulent, des volcans et des forgerons ". "Pour reprendre une belle expression de Michaël Levinas, « composer c’est comme plonger les mains dans l’infini ». Penser au projet de manière métaphorique me donne une direction dans le travail confie-t-il à Véronique Brindeau dans la revue Accents de l’EIC. Un titre comme Vulcano fait travailler l’imaginaire de multiples manières… Je ne fais pas de figuralisme : c’est un fil, une histoire que je me raconte, surtout au début, et que j’oublie ensuite pour me concentrer essentiellement sur le son et le timbre. Ces images, ces dynamismes, m’aident à avancer, j’en ai besoin pour écrire une pièce, pour qu’il y ait un geste, une trajectoire perceptible " poursuit Yann Robin. Son oeuvre dirigée par Susanna Mälkki sera précédée au même programme par Flag de Donatoni et Jour, Contre-jour de Gérard Grisey.
