Comment s’articule la résidence de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Rotterdam au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées ?
Yannick Nézet-Séguin : La résidence est prévue sur plusieurs années, au moins trois ans. Chaque saison, l’Orchestre donnera trois programmes, dont deux sous ma direction. Le but est d’offrir un portrait de l’Orchestre en montrant les différents axes de son répertoire. Il n’y aura donc pas d’intégrale, mais on pourra entendre cette saison Mahler et Bruckner, puis sans doute de la musique russe, du Richard Strauss, et en projet figure même une Passion selon Saint Matthieu de Bach. Par ailleurs, je viendrai peut-être aussi avec d’autres orchestres, notamment ceux de Dresde, de Vienne ou de Philadelphie, pourquoi pas !
Pour le premier concert de votre résidence, vous dirigez la Symphonie n°2 « Résurrection » de Mahler. Quel rapport entretenez-vous avec cette œuvre ?
Y.N.-S. : C’est à la fois la première symphonie de Mahler que j’ai entendue, à l’âge de onze ans, et la première que j’ai dirigée, avec l’Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal en 2001. Je suis très sensible à sa construction, qui passe des ténèbres à la lumière. Par ailleurs, pour moi qui ai vraiment aimé la musique vers l’âge de huit ans en chantant dans un chœur, je ne peux qu’être touché par l’emploi du chœur à la fin de cette œuvre.
Quelle est l’identité sonore de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Rotterdam ?
Y.N.-S. : Sous la direction de Jean Fournet, cet orchestre a cultivé son goût pour la musique française, puis a été discipliné avec Edo de Waart et James Conlon, avant de dévoiler tout son éclat avec Valery Gergiev. Je dois à présent faire la synthèse de tout ça ! C’est un orchestre qui mérite vraiment d’être plus connu. Il offre une telle puissance, une telle implication des musiciens !
Cette formation ne pâtit-elle pas de l’ombre de l’Orchestre du Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam ?
Y.N.-S. : Rotterdam est une ville portuaire, très moderne, tandis qu’Amsterdam est plus aristocratique. On retrouve cette différence au niveau des orchestres. Les musiciens de Rotterdam ne cherchent pas à imiter et préfèrent au contraire cultiver la différence. Par ailleurs, même des villes moyennes ont aujourd’hui des formations de première qualité : voyez le travail accompli par Simon Rattle à Birmingham.
Quel est votre projet avec l’Orchestre de Philadelphie, dont vous prendrez la direction dans deux ans ?
Y.N.S. : Il faut renouer les liens de cet orchestre avec sa ville, pour que Philadelphie soit fière de cet outil. Il y a eu dans un passé récent beaucoup de changements d’administration et pas de directeur musical. Il est essentiel de donner maintenant des directives claires. Nous mettons en place un plan stratégique qui a aussi pour but de redonner envie aux mécènes individuels de financer l’orchestre, certains étant partis suite à la crise économique.
Quel rapport entretenez-vous globalement avec la vie musicale française ?
Y.N-S. : En 2004, c’est à la tête de l’Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse que j’ai fait mes débuts en Europe. Je suis ensuite venu diriger les orchestres de Monte-Carlo, Lyon et le National de France. Mais aujourd’hui, je préfère me concentrer sur les formations avec lesquelles j’approfondis une relation. D’autant que je dirige aussi à l’opéra, notamment au Met de New York, où j’ai une production chaque année.
