Vous êtes devenue chanteuse assez tard ?
Yasmin Levy : Mon père était musicien [Yitzhak Levy, qui a activement travaillé à l’archivage du patrimoine chanté des Juifs séfarades NDR]. Il voulait que ses enfants apprennent la musique, mais il savait que c’était une vie très difficile et voulait que nous fassions des études. Vers 22 ans, j’ouvre donc mon cabinet de réflexologie et dès ma première consultation, je n’arrête pas de regarder ma montre. A la fin, le patient me demande la date du prochain rendez-vous. Et je lui ai répondu : “non je vais chanter !”
Depuis vos débuts, vous vous consacrez au répertoire Ladino, pourquoi ?
Y. L. : Mon père et ma mère se sont rencontrés sur le casting d’une sorte de “Star Academy” il y a 40 ans. Il avait 45 ans, elle en avait 17. Ils sont tombés amoureux et il lui a dit : “Soit tu deviens ma femme, soit tu deviens chanteuse”. Et elle a choisi de devenir sa femme. Douze ans plus tard, il est décédé. Elle s’est remise à chanter, mais juste pour le plaisir. Un jour, elle m’a dit de venir chanter avec elle pour un concert. Deux hommes sont venus me proposer une bourse. Et donc j’ai fait mon premier disque : “Romance”. Il n’y a pas tant de gens qui chantent Ladino. Cette langue est sur le point de mourir et seules ces chansons vont survivre. Mon père est décédé quand j’avais un an, c’est ma manière de continuer son œuvre.

Comme le Fado, c’est une musique qui est tellement triste qu’elle en devient sublime ?
Y. L. : Le Fado a 2000 années d’histoire, le Ladino 5000, mais c’est la même chose. Certaines œuvres vous touchent en vous faisant faire rire, danser… D’autres se servent du chagrin pour vous émouvoir – c’est ce que je préfère. J’adore Edith Piaf et Billie Holiday. Quand elles chantent, on peut entendre leur vie, comme Eleni Vitaly, une chanteuse grecque avec laquelle je fais un duo sur “Sentir”. Je ne suis pas une gentille chanteuse : soit vous adorez ma musique, soit vous la détestez. Je suis la plus heureuse des personnes à avoir en son cœur la plus grande des tristesses.
