« Chaque femme a du sang pour quatre ou cinq enfants, et celles qui n’en ont pas, leur sang se change en poison, c’est ce qui va m’arriver » lâche Yerma, le cœur sarclé par l’attente. Voilà déjà deux ans que son père l’a mariée à Juan, brave travailleur, et que son ventre reste sec. Deux ans d’espoirs chaque jour plus ardents, chaque jour plus déchirants, plus étouffants, qui butent contre les murs lisses, tellement lisses, de son existence, et qui s’écrasent sous les pointes vénéneuses des commères du village. « Les brebis au bercail, les femmes à la maison ». Telle est la règle de la société paysanne dans l’Andalousie de 1934, quand Federico Garcia Lorca compose cette pièce, deux ans avant de tomber sous les balles franquistes. Retranchées derrière l’épaisse enceinte de leur foyer, les jeunes filles n’ont plus qu’à s’épanouir dans les langes et à crocheter leur liberté dans les trous de leurs dentelles pour le restant de leurs jours, sous le regard castrateur du qu’en-dira-t-on. Et pourtant Yerma voulait boire l’eau de la vie à grosses gorgées. Devenir femme dans un monde où sa seule fonction est d’enfanter. « Une femme de la campagne qui ne donne pas d’enfant est aussi inutile qu’un poignée d’aubépine. » Condamnée à épier le soleil par l’embrasure des jalousies, elle boit lentement le lait amer de son destin. Jusqu’à s’empoisonner.
Psychose criminelle
Il faut un sacré talent pour libérer tous les arômes de la langue de Garcia Lorca, gorgée d’odeurs de terre et de sang, étourdie d’absolu et de désir. Coraly Zahonero (Yerma) a cette force-là. Vivace beauté, fraîche comme la rosée à l’orée de l’avenir, elle se lézarde peu à peu, griffée par les regards aiguisés sur les méchantes pierres de la malveillance, lentement écorchée vive par l’acide de sa souffrance. La comédienne tient ensemble le lyrisme et la blessure, la résolution et la révolte, l’honneur et l’audace, avec une fragilité indestructible. Laurent Natrella (Juan) lui renvoie sa tendresse maladroite, son égoïsme bourru, cloîtré qu’il est dans son impuissance à comprendre et délier ses sentiments. Pour mettre en scène ce drame rural de haute tension, le compositeur toulousain Vicente Pradal a choisi de ne pas traduire les parties versifiées, chantées en une prosodie Flamenco par Alberto García et Paloma Pradal, accompagnés au piano par Rafael Pradal. Une affaire de famille donc, mais qui charge la mise en scène, tristement conventionnelle, d’Espagnolades bien inutiles. Heureusement, les acteurs sont là !
