Faim devient Ylajali : plus d’un siècle après l’écriture de ce roman poignant, qui décrit la dérive hallucinée d’un jeune homme aux prises avec la faim et les troubles intellectuels et psychologiques qu’elle provoque en lui, Jon Fosse adapte pour la scène cette odyssée intérieure. Il respecte les grandes lignes de l’histoire initiale en y mêlant ses propres obsessions, en épurant les personnages jusqu’à en faire des entités tragiques, qui « font tout pour survivre, envers et contre tout ». Dans un univers inspiré par les toiles de Léon Spilliaert et d’Edward Munch, « entre réalisme et étrangeté », Gabriel Dufay, Muranyi Kovacs et Jean-Paul Wenzel investissent le plateau par un jeu très physique, campant « des athlètes affectifs qui passent leur temps à se mesurer, se chercher l’un l’autre dans la jungle des villes ». En ces temps de crise, Ylajali résonne comme une prémonition.
