Né à Paris en 1955, le violoncelliste américain d’origine chinoise Yo-Yo Ma est l’une des personnalités musicales les plus fascinantes de notre temps. Formé par Leonard Rose à la Juilliard School de New York, il débute sa carrière en 1963 (il a 8 ans !) sous la direction de Leonard Bernstein. La suite tient aussi du rêve et du sans faute, marquée par un engagement constant en faveur de la création d’œuvres nouvelles (Gruber, Takemitsu, Dutilleux, Tod Machover, Leon Kirchner etc…), une ouverture musicale éclairée (Piazzolla, Bobby McFerrin, etc…) et un enregistrement décisif des Suites de Bach. Son apparition dans la saison de l’Orchestre de Paris en cette rentrée musicale est une véritable aubaine. Yo-Yo Ma aborde l’un des passages obligés du répertoire concertant de l’instrument, le généreux et épique Concerto de Dvorak, complété par la Symphonie en mi bémol d’Hindemith, défendue par Christoph Eschenbach, grand connaisseur et ambassadeur de l’œuvre du sévère compositeur allemand.
