C’est au début de la crise sanitaire que Youn Sun Nah a eu l’idée d’accoucher ce nouveau répertoire. Le sien de A à Z, elle qui s’était fait surtout connaître pour ses reprises. « S’il n’y avait pas eu le Covid, je n’aurais jamais osé enregistrer ce disque, avec mes compositions. Je pensais ne pas être prête à assumer le rôle de compositrice. » Bien lui en a pris tant Waking World démontre qu’au-delà de l’interprète il y a une créatrice d’univers. En une quarantaine de minutes la native de Séoul donne à ses chansons des inflexions pop et folk, « des fragments d’histoire, comme des séquences mises bout à bout », sans perdre ce sentiment jazz qui fonde sa personnalité. Comme une bande-son originale, avec guitares éclectiques (Thomas Naïm) et tout type de claviers (Tony Paeleman), qui sublime ses craintes en de multiples reflets clairs-obscurs.
