C’est à la fin des années 1990 que le natif de Kinshasa, débarqué en France à dix ans où il se fera vite remarquer pour ses qualités d’écriture, a affûté ses rimes. Ce qui transpire dans ses premiers albums, À chaque frère (2007) et Sur les chemins du retour (2009), tous deux disques d’or, où Youssoupha ne manque pas de pointer avec brio les dérives sectaires de certains politiques. Mais c’est trois ans plus tard, avec Noir D****, qu’il passe un cap, parvenant à un crossover sans céder aux sirènes de la facilité, conviant même son père, l’illustre Tabu Ley Rochereau. Onze ans plus tard, le rappeur reprend les termes de cet album écrit en hommage au peuple noir pour en proposer une version originale, où il croisera ses mots dits au chant sacré du gospel, le tout mis en sons par l’Orchestre National d’Île-de-France.
