Dans l’esprit de recherche et d’écriture qui a donné naissance à son précédent spectacle, Scènes de violences conjugales, Gérard Watkins propose une étude qui puise dans la matière théâtrale de l’hystérie, passant en revue ses conceptions passées et auscultant ses formes actuelles. « Cette affection – réputée féminine – fait énigme et a, de tout temps, constitué un défi au savoir – traditionnellement masculin – qu’il soit religieux, juridique ou médical. Mais qu’entend-on par ce terme ? » Sans symptôme typique, l’hystérie est, selon le mot d’André Breton, un « moyen suprême d’expression » qui engage le corps tout entier dans la représentation, à l’instar de l’art théâtral. Gérard Watkins imagine « une sorte d’installation médicale », qui rappelle les leçons du mardi où Charcot essayait de comprendre ce mal mystérieux. A mi-chemin entre thriller et conférence, les comédiens composent un florilège de la domination masculine à travers les âges.
