Yuja Wang est apparue il y a quelques années dans le paysage pianistique, apportant sa technique impressionnante, qui a d’emblée séduit Deutsche Grammophon (elle a déjà enregistré deux disques pour le prestigieux label) ainsi que quelques musiciens de premier ordre comme Lorin Maazel ou Claudio Abbado. Pourtant, plus que par une virtuosité peut-être un peu trop convenue à force d’être exemplaire, la jeune pianiste se distingue par la curiosité dont témoignent ses programmes. Pour son premier enregistrement, elle avait choisi des sonates et études mêlant Chopin, Liszt, Scriabine et Ligeti – un programme qu’elle avait en partie interprété sur la scène du Théâtre du Châtelet en 2008, remplaçant au pied levé Murray Perahia. L’an dernier, Yuja Wang enchaînait Scarlatti, Schumann, Schubert (transcrit par Liszt) et Prokofiev. Cette année, elle ouvre son récital avec les Piano Variations d’Aaron Copland (1931), œuvre la plus moderniste du compositeur américain, riche de contrastes, que peu inscrivent à leur répertoire. Suivent les Miroirs de Ravel, quelques préludes et études de Rachmaninov – où la virtuosité de Yuja Wang pourra s’exprimer à plein – et un finale brahmsien (Klavierstücke op 116 et Sonate op. 1).
