L’implantation de ce festival à Cholet n’est-elle pas liée au parcours de la compagnie dont vous êtes avant tout le directeur artistique ?
Yvann Alexandre : La compagnie a été créée en 1993, et j’ai toujours fonctionné en résidence : Montpellier, Avignon et Cavaillon, Sceaux où on revient périodiquement, Rennes, La Roche-sur-Yon… Cholet m’a accueilli dans le cadre d’un nouveau projet de résidence 2004-2013. C’est fondamentalement différent, car nous sommes en résidence sur un territoire et pas sur un lieu, dans la durée, et avec une totale liberté artistique. Cholet est une ville de culture théâtrale, où la danse n’avait pas de vraie visibilité. L’idée d’un festival existait déjà, mais nous avons réfléchi ensemble à redéfinir sa forme : avec la nécessité qu’il soit bien le festival de la ville, qu’il montre autre chose que ce que l’on voit en région, et qu’il soit un événement populaire.

Comment cette notion d’événement populaire se traduit-elle dans la programmation ?
Y. A. : Je voulais vraiment que la construction soit le fruit d’un dialogue entre mes collègues chorégraphes et moi. Je suis allé les chercher avec la même question : essayons d’inventer un parcours sur mesure pour ce territoire-là, avec bien sûr à l’intérieur une œuvre qui permette de situer la compagnie dans son actualité (par exemple Fabrice Ramalingom avec Pandora Box / Body créée pour Montpellier danse, ou bien Nicolas Maloufi avec Petites et grandes complications, Frank Micheletti et Archipelago…). Ces parcours vont du matin jusqu’au soir, et suivent la journée du danseur. Tous les matins on commence par une classe à ciel ouvert sur la place principale. Chacun des chorégraphes viendra montrer son travail, avec tous ceux qui voudront tenter ou simplement regarder. Cholet est une ville ouvrière, besogneuse, et j’avais envie d’un fil rouge basé sur le corps ouvrier et le sur-mesure en montrant au public qu’au-delà du spectacle de danse, c’est d’abord un corps qui travaille que nous montrons. A l’exception du spectacle du soir, toutes les autres propositions sont sans lumière, sans costume, sans musique. Juste le corps. Cela se pose à même le sol, cela investit les jardins, les rues, les chapelles, les galeries d’art…
Il y a un autre fil rouge, artistique, qui est la présence de Louise Bédard…
Y. A. : Exactement. Quand je vais au Québec, il y a une grande dame dont j’entends rarement parler par voie de presse, mais que tous les danseurs évoquent systématiquement : c’est Louise Bédard. Elle a son pendant en France dans la communauté des danseurs à travers Christine Bastin et Ingeborg Liptay. Trois grandes dames, trois parcours radicalement différents, avec un point commun qui est le labeur sur la durée, et puis la discrétion. Leur présence dans le festival est une façon pour moi de répondre à ce que pouvait être un pilier pour la communauté, en montrant différents formats de leur travail avec des performances, des créations, du répertoire.
