Créé en 1724, Le Prince travesti n’est pas la pièce la plus connue de Marivaux mais on y retrouve bien des tropismes du dramaturge : travestissement, valets et maîtres, rire grinçant et situations piquantes. L’action se situe en Espagne où le prince de Léon se fait passer pour un aventurier sous le nom de Lélio puis s’engage comme mercenaire dans l’armée de la princesse de Barcelone. Devenu son favori, il retrouve à la Cour Hortense, une jeune princesse qu’il avait sauvée d’une attaque de brigands. Alors qu’ils s’aiment secrètement, la princesse de Barcelone, elle aussi amoureuse de Lélio, charge Hortense de déclarer sa flamme ! Quiproquos, valets astucieux, fin sous forme de double mariage : bien entendu, il ne s’agit pas que d’amour. Selon Yves Beaunesne, « c’est surtout la France de la Régence qui nous est donnée à voir : période d’entre-deux où les valeurs de l’Ancien Régime battent de l’aile ». Au-delà de la sphère privée, la pièce est à ses yeux « directement politique où l’enchevêtrement des histoires d’amour, des négociations internationales, de l’obsession sécuritaire, du contrôle toujours accru des individus et des rapports de classes paraît plus inextricable que jamais. »
