Vous semblez entretenir un lien particulier avec Voltaire, que vous fréquentiez déjà dans Feu Voltaire et Nos fantômes. Quel « dialogue » entretenez-vous avec ses œuvres au fil des années ?
Yves Laplace : Voltaire est un combat, d’abord pour jouer son théâtre. Voltaire était le dramaturge le plus fameux de son temps. Il a signé une cinquantaine de tragédies et comédies, qui méritaient d’être redécouvertes. Combat pour construire un nouveau théâtre à Ferney-Voltaire, ensuite. Combat contre les censures contemporaines aussi : en 1993 à Genève, Hervé Loichemol et moi affrontions Tariq Ramadan et ses amis, qui faisaient leur entrée dans le débat public en prévenant les autorités politiques contre le projet de mise en scène de la tragédie Mahomet. Ils sont alors parvenus à empêcher le spectacle. Nous avons riposté, dans Nos fantômes, à cette censure. Je suis convaincu que l’ironie voltairienne peut s’incarner, qu’elle peut donc affronter le plateau, et même qu’elle a été en partie façonnée par la passion concrète de Voltaire pour le théâtre.
Vous critiquez la façon dont Candide est souvent édulcoré, voire trahi. Quelle est aujourd’hui sa résonance politique ?
Y. L. : Candide invente un genre – le conte philosophique – et pourrait bien être, à l’insu de son auteur, la meilleure de ses pièces : grinçante et drôle, érotique et mal pensante. Une pièce de guerre, car publiée sur fond de Guerre de Sept Ans, et épique avant la lettre… On ne peut pas relire Candide sur scène sans songer parfois à Mère Courage, parfois à Bardamu dans Voyage au bout de la nuit… Nul doute que cette fable résonne aujourd’hui. Il y est question de l’être tué par l’avoir, d’un optimisme frelaté qui rappelle celui de la Bourse, de tous les semblants imaginables. Il y est aussi question d’exil, de persécution religieuse, et d’un jardin à cultiver chez les Turcs, à l’étranger. Nous voulons montrer comment Voltaire, en opposant le Derviche au paysan turc, donne une leçon, parfois inaperçue, de philosophie et surtout d’hospitalité.
Quelles ont été les lignes directrices de votre adaptation ?
Y. L. : J’ai pris le parti de donner la parole à Candide, et non de laisser seulement les autres parler autour de lui. Il s’agit d’un coup de force, car Candide, chez Voltaire, est le plus souvent silencieux ; c’est une sorte d’ectoplasme, de page blanche. Le voici narrateur de son conte, et joué par William Nadylam, ce qui ajoute à son étrangeté. Or cette étrangeté, qui est celle de la personne déplacée, nous parle. J’ai tenté, aussi, de transposer le mouvement du conte entier – d’un voyage ou d’un naufrage à l’autre –, plutôt que d’isoler les épisodes fameux. Du coup, l’invitation finale à cultiver notre jardin prend un sens ouvert et risqué… Le contraire d’un repli ou d’une fermeture.
Quels sont les axes du travail d’Hervé Loichemol pour mettre en scène votre Candide ?
Y. L. : Il privilégie un travail de troupe et un théâtre de tréteaux, dans une scénographie mobile de Pierre-André Weitz, inspirée par les figures de l’utopie. Pour Hervé, Candide est pris dans une sorte de grande essoreuse, et ce mouvement qui précipite et abîme les personnages aux quatre coins du monde est celui de l’Histoire. Il a resserré le spectacle sur l’amour de Candide et Cunégonde, qui est un moteur de la fable, autant sinon plus que le débat avec l’optimisme de Pangloss. Cette mise en scène et le travail des comédiens cherchent à inscrire Candide dans notre présent tourmenté.
