Comme pour les précédents opéras de Philippe Boesmans, la création d’Yvonne, princesse de Bourgogne fait figure d’événement. Depuis La Ronde, son deuxième opéra, créé en 1993 au Théâtre de la Monnaie de Bruxelles, Philippe Boesmans ne s’est plus départi de son goût pour les grandes œuvres littéraires qui lui fournissent la matière d’ouvrages lyriques inventifs, même s’ils conservent une structure relativement classique. Il s’agit bien là d’opéra, non de théâtre musical, dans l’acception d’expérimentation formelle que revêt l’expression. La théâtralité cependant est indéniable dans chacun des ouvrages, que ce soit La Ronde (d’après Arthur Schnitzler), Le Conte d’hiver (d’après Shakespeare) ou Julie (d’après August Strindberg). En cela, il faut reconnaître la qualité du travail qu’a mené Luc Bondy sur chacun de ces ouvrages, à la fois comme librettiste et comme metteur en scène, à tel point que l’on peut parler véritablement d’un travail commun auquel doit également être associé le chef Sylvain Cambreling, qui avait dirigé la création de La Ronde et de plusieurs œuvres symphoniques du compositeur belge et qui sera de nouveau dans la fosse pour Yvonne, princesse de Bourgogne, à la tête du remarquable Klangforum Wien.
Sombre galerie de portraits
Marquée par une certaine cruauté, dont les personnages féminins surtout sont tour à tour auteurs et victimes, l’œuvre lyrique de Philippe Boesmans oscille entre réalisme et fantaisie onirique. Le compositeur et son librettiste renouent ici avec des personnages magnifiques, individus meurtris au point d’en perdre leur voix (comme Perdita dans Le Conte d’hiver, Yvonne est enfermée dans un mutisme presque constant). On imagine ce que Philippe Boesmans saura tirer de la galerie de portraits composée par le dramaturge polonais, une société toute de lâcheté, de manipulation et de renoncement. Parallèlement, l’amphithéâtre de l’Opéra Bastille accueille trois représentations de La Ronde, dans un effectif orchestral allégé et une mise en scène de Harry Kupfer.
