Vous êtes à l’affiche de deux spectacles adaptant à la scène des romans de Lydie Salvayre. Qu’est-ce qui vous lie à cette écriture ?
Zabou Breitman : Le style de Lydie Salvayre est cru, cruel, direct et élaboré, populaire et recherché. C’est dans les grandes tragédies de ses romans que sont tapies les réactions les plus drôles, ou dingues, ou les deux à la fois. J’aime la disjonction, les fêlures de cette écriture qui reste cependant toujours proche de nous, toujours accessible.
De quoi traitent La Médaille et La Compagnie des spectres ?
Z. Br. : La Médaille traite d’une cérémonie de remise de médailles du travail, dans une entreprise de fabrication de voitures. L’Entreprise Bisson, qui a pris son essor en 1944 en vendant des chars à l’Allemagne, va traverser un moment de chaos, orchestré par des ouvriers en mal de vivre. Huit acteurs, patrons ou médaillés (dont une veuve de médaillé), se partagent la scène, entre leur chaise et un micro sur pied, s’adressant au public (qui n’est autre que celui de l’usine assistant à la cérémonie). Quant à La Compagnie des Spectres, c’est l’histoire d’une fille et de sa mère, confrontées à un huissier venu faire l’état des lieux dans leur modeste appartement de Créteil. On apprend comment la vie a basculé, le 13 mars 1943, dans un village français vivant au rythme des mesures de Vichy.

Quelles couleurs avez-vous souhaité donner à ces deux spectacles ?
Z. Br. : La Médaille est essentiellement portée par le texte et les acteurs. Il y a très peu d’éléments de décor. J’avais envie d’une lumière unique, simple, mais de davantage de recherches sur le son. Dans La Compagnie des spectres, c’est moi qui interprète tous les personnages de ce roman écrit à la première personne (mais laquelle… ?). Les poupées russes se perdent – fille, mère, grand-mère… Et les souvenirs que l’huissier fait ressortir, technique et impudique, sont au centre de l’espace, du drame, de l’absurde.
Vous avez pour la première fois abordé la mise en scène de théâtre il y a 6 ans. Qu’est-ce qui vous a donné envie de vous lancer dans cette nouvelle aventure artistique ?
Z. Br. : La nouvelle aventure, précisément, un élan. Je crois que je cherchais un nouvel espace de jeu qui offre une pensée différente.
Quel type de metteure en scène pensez-vous être ?
Z. Br. : Je n’en sais rien. Me définir m’est très difficile. En ce qui concerne la direction d’acteurs, je pense que quelque chose s’est passé depuis ma mise en scène de Des gens. Une conscience de l’abandon peut-être ou, au contraire, un abandon de la conscience…
