« Ce qui m’a toujours intéressé, c’est le point où l’humain bascule dans l’inhumain : comment naît un monstre ? Ce point de bascule est très bien décrit par le personnage de Médée, cette étrangère qui a tout sacrifié pour un homme qui décide de l’abandonner pour une autre : en elle quelque chose implose et elle décide de tuer tous ceux qui entourent Jason, jusqu’à ses enfants. Elle présente son geste de façon très logique : je prends tout, je pars avec tout. On pourrait presque considérer que son geste est biologiquement logique, mais à quel endroit est-il social, moral, et jugeable par la loi des hommes ? Je ne sais le dire et le théâtre est justement ce qui me permet de le palper, de le définir et de faire en sorte que le public ne le reçoive pas seulement de façon cérébrale. Le théâtre est l’endroit où éprouver ces choses qu’on s’interdit d’explorer dans la vraie vie. »
Un travail centré sur le texte et l’acteur
« Avec Marie Payen, qui joue Médée, nous avons cherché ensemble un chemin de travail pendant cinq ans. En tant que metteur en scène, je n’ai jamais cessé d’évoluer vers une toujours plus grande symbiose avec les acteurs. C’est l’acteur qui perturbe l’espace, qui provoque l’émotion dans une remise en doute quotidienne. Je veux des acteurs poussés au maximum de leur fonction, dans l’action, comme l’indique l’étymologie de cette fonction, et pas seulement dans l’obédience. Jean-Louis Martinelli m’avait donné ma chance comme acteur et me l’a donné à nouveau comme metteur en scène et j’ai voulu aboutir chez lui ce travail qui reconnaît l’énergie qu’on a pu mettre à croire qu’on pouvait occuper le terrain en banlieue en y faisant de l’artistique et pas seulement du social, qu’on pouvait grandir dans ces endroits-là et y rester pour les magnifier. Monter cette pièce à Nanterre couronne autant un processus de travail long et exigeant qu’une trajectoire personnelle. »
