On ne le présente plus… Cette star de la world music est le fils et élève d’un grand spécialiste des tablas, Ustad Alla Rakha, partenaire privilégié de Ravi Shankar. Enfant surdoué, il fait ses débuts scéniques à l’âge de 12 ans. Nourri de traditions, il est aussi un musicien novateur et curieux, soucieux de dépasser les cadres convenus.
Au début des années 70, il entame une fabuleuse aventure américaine qui culmine en 1975 avec la création du groupe jazz-rock « Shakti » avec John McLaughlin. Il ne cessera ensuite d’être attiré par les rencontres (Jan Garbarek, George Harrison, Van Morrison, Tito Puente, etc.) mais sans jamais perdre le contact avec les fondements des traditions musicales d’Inde du Nord comme en attestent ses collaborations avec des maîtres tels que Ali Akbar Khan, Ravi Shankar ou Hariprasad Chaurasia. Son prochain récital parisien éclaire très classiquement deux volets fondamentaux de la musique indienne : le Raga, l’art mélodique indien par excellence, en compagnie de deux géants du sitar et du sarangi (Niladri Kumar et Dilshad Khan), et le tala, la science du rythme, entouré de quelques-uns des meilleurs percussionnistes du pays.
