Dernier fils de Jean-Sébastien Bach, Jean-Chrétien Bach (1735-1782) a très tôt versé dans l’opéra italien, qu’il met en pratique lors d’un séjour en Italie. À l’invitation du King’s Theatre de Londres, il livre en 1763 deux opéras. Le second, Zanaïda était considéré comme perdu avant que la partition n’en soit redécouverte chez un collectionneur et éditée. David Stern et Opera Fuoco s’en sont depuis emparés avec leur fougue habituelle et donnent à cette œuvre – célébration du courage de Zanaïde, sacrifiée par son père Soliman à la Paix entre Turcs et Perses – une nouvelle vie. Présenté en septembre dernier en version de concert, cet opera seria en trois actes voit ici sa création scénique en France. Saluée par la critique lors de sa création l’an dernier au Festival Bach de Leipzig, la mise en scène de Sigrid T’Hooft recrée avec vraisemblance, par un travail précis sur la gestuelle baroque, l’atmosphère de l’œuvre, après plus de deux siècles d’oubli.
