Œuvre majeure d’un compositeur jouissant alors d’une exceptionnelle reconnaissance, Zoroastre valut à Rameau l’un de ses plus grands insuccès lors de sa création en 1749. Trop modernes sans doute pour l’époque, le livret comme la musique mettent en avant l’opposition du Bien et du Mal et transforment les personnages en allégories. L’arrière-fond maçonnique du livret a souvent été souligné (comme dans La Flûte enchantée, voyages initiatiques et intronisation y ont leur place) mais c’est surtout de la tension née de l’opposition du Bien et du Mal que joue Pierre Audi dans cette production très applaudie lors de sa création à Drottningholm puis à Amsterdam et désormais disponible en DVD (chez Opus Arte). Opposé aux voix graves symbolisant le mal, le ténor Anders Dahlin reprend ici le rôle de « l’inventeur de la Magie », aux côtés de Sine Bungaard (Amélite) et Anna Maria Panzarella (Erinice).
